Public Health Advocates brings a public health lens to the pressing issues of our day, working with communities to challenge the social, political, and economic systems perpetuating racial, economic, and health disparities.

All Children Thrive – California (ACT-CA)

Community partnerships.
Bold public health strategies.
Better policies to prevent and mitigate childhood trauma.

At Public Health Advocates, we work with communities to prevent and mitigate childhood trauma. All Children Thrive California (ACT) empowers residents in over 30 California cities to create policy changes for the benefit of children and families. At ACT, we partner with community-based organizations, youth, and community members. We provide them with training, coaching, and resources that help them to access valuable data, raise awareness about adverse childhood experiences, and change public policy.

This campaign is funded by the state of California and led in partnership with the UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families, and Communities.

Emergency Resilience Project

Community partnerships.
Bold public health strategies.
Better policies that build resilience to future emergencies.

At Public Health Advocates, we work to ensure that everyone gets the support they need before, during, and after emergencies such as pandemics, wildfires, and floods. The Emergency Resilience Project builds California’s capacity to prepare for and respond to future emergencies by repairing inequities in our emergency preparedness and response systems. Originally named California COVID Justice, this initiative draws on lessons from the COVID pandemic to shape a future where resources and investments reach communities facing the greatest harm.

This campaign is funded by Blue Shield of California Foundation, The California Endowment, and The California Wellness Foundation.

First Response Transformation

Community partnerships.
Bold public health strategies.
Policies for safer and more equitable emergency first response.

At Public Health Advocates, we are reimagining public safety. California’s current 9-1-1 first response system falls short of meeting evolving community needs, especially in addressing issues like homelessness and mental health crises. Our First Response Transformation Campaign helps local champions throughout California create and sustain alternative response programs. These programs provide services that better align available responses to community needs, while being less costly than police, fire, and emergency medical services. This campaign is funded by the CARESTAR Foundation.

Neighborhood Change Champions

Community partnerships.
Bold public health strategies.
Better policies designed by young advocates.

At Public Health Advocates, we work to reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes. Neighborhood Change Champions (NCC) is a youth-driven campaign that advocates for healthier communities in San Joaquin County census tracts with the greatest health disparities. Through NCC we are training youth advocates and helping them choose an issue they want to address and advocate for the change they want to see.

This campaign is funded by the U.S. Office of Minority Health.

State Policy

Community partnerships.
Bold public health strategies.
Better policies for health, equity, and racial justice in California.

At Public Health Advocates, our work has led to more than a dozen new state laws and $600 million in state funding for critical initiatives. Currently, we are sponsoring legislation to protect California’s youth from the harms of social media and working to improve California’s ability to prepare for and respond to future pandemics and climate emergencies.

Our lobbying efforts are funded through donations of unrestricted funds.

Transformative Climate Communities

Community partnerships.
Bold public health strategies.
Creating healthier, more sustainable neighborhoods.

At Public Health Advocates, we work with communities harmed by environmental damage and economic disinvestment to adapt to climate change, cut pollution, and reduce energy costs.

As a member of dynamic coalitions in Stockton and San Joaquin County, we help community members become climate leaders who engage with their communities to advance climate justice.

This work is funded by the California Strategic Growth Council.

REACH Stockton (Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health)

Community partnerships.
Bold public health strategies.
Better policies for a healthier and safer Stockton.

At Public Health Advocates, we build healthy, thriving communities. Within Our REACH Stockton works with predominantly African American faith- and community-based organizations to advocate for policies at the organizational and local levels. We promote healthy eating and active living, advance breastfeeding, and help to ensure that all families have access to safe community spaces.

This campaign is funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
