State Policy

Public Health Advocates works with communities to establish policies, systems, and norms that promote health and racial justice. One way we do that is by changing policy at the state level in California.

BUDGET

Following two years of large surpluses, California is now facing a budget deficit, and revenue is forecasted to decline in coming years. At Public Health Advocates, we support maintaining and increasing investments in public health solutions that improve health and wellbeing in our most underinvested communities. We oppose spending cuts that will perpetuate racial, economic and health disparities.

We are asking Governor Gavin Newsom and the California legislature for:

  • New investments in low-income housing and services to help unhoused people meet their basic needs, live with dignity and find housing
  • More funding for access to medical, mental health and reproductive care
  • More funding for alternative first response programs that can meet community needs better than our tradition 9-1-1 emergency response system
