Communications Specialist

Public Health Advocates (PHAdvocates) seeks a dynamic Communications Specialist to support key communications activities and goals for the organization. The Communications Specialist will support the development of content across multiple communications channels to drive awareness of PHAdvocates’ mission as well as organizational and community initiatives. The Specialist will support communications strategies for PHAdvocates’ various programs, which includes developing and designing campaigns, advocacy and promotional materials.

  • Supports communications strategies and goals for the different projects and overall organization to reach target audiences through the development of social media, blogs, digital and graphic media, press releases and other relevant materials
  • Create written and visual/multimedia content for email, website, and social media platforms to raise awareness of PHAdvocates’ mission, programs, and initiatives
  • Assist with maintaining and updating the PHAdvocates website and program websites (WordPress and Wix)
  • Curate and share content relevant to the organization, including trending topics
  • Monitor PHAdvocates’ social media and online presence
  • Track news coverage of PHAdvocates – programs, staff, events, etc.
  • Support events, including promotion through eblasts and social media
  • Assist with online fundraising campaigns
  • Assist with design of in-house graphics for email, social media, website and printed collateral as needed
  • Ensure messaging and branding consistency of PHAdvocates communications
  • Edit copy, fact check, and proofread content for use in print and digital materials as assigned
  • Ability to write/communicate within and across cultures in culturally appropriate ways


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in communications, public relations, journalism or related field and at least 3 years of experience in public relations, communications, marketing or journalism
  • Prior public health and non-profit experience a plus
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Strong organizational & interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator,), WordPress, Hootsuite
  • Must be proficient in using and interacting on the following social media platforms: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, LinkTree


  • This is a full-time non-exempt position
  • Hourly Rate: $20-$22 per hour depending on relevant experience
  • Occasional evening and weekend hours
  • Position available immediately
